Rebuilding Daily Rhythms From Isolation to Culinary School

Residents cooking dinner together at Elim House

Living through profound transition brings both unexpected challenges and quiet moments of grace. For Tiffany, a resident at Elim House, faith was once an abstract concept—a prayer whispered into the unknown while fleeing through China and Thailand. Today, that quiet faith has become the foundation for emotional healing, restored relationships, and a renewed sense of purpose.

A Song in the Dark: The Power of Prayer

During a recent Sunday worship service at Elim House, Tiffany shared the story behind her favorite praise song, "Someone is Praying for You".

Reflecting on her past, she recalled moments when circumstances felt entirely overwhelming. "Whenever things were difficult, singing this song gave me strength," she shared. "It reminded me that when I pray, God hears me, and He changes my situation."

Her understanding of God was forged through survival. During a one-on-one Bible study in Genesis exploring the existence of God, Tiffany moved to tears as she reflected on how creation, human conscience, and Scripture reveal a loving Creator. Her deepest proof, however, was personal: while fleeing through hidden routes of the underground railroad in Asia, knowing neither what lay ahead nor whom she was speaking to, she prayed. Looking back, she recognizes that those unanswered questions were met by a faithful God who was watching over her.

Navigating Life Together: Healing Broken Relationships

Living in the Elim House community brings immense blessings, but sharing space with others can also reveal relational tensions. Even in a safe environment, interpersonal conflict can create emotional walls.

Tiffany candidly reflected on her personal struggles regarding a former shelter resident, Naomi. Following a difficult disagreement, Tiffany had made a quiet vow in her heart never to engage with her again.

Transformation came through daily reflection on Scripture. While reading Proverbs 21:9 during her quiet time, Tiffany recalled her time living with Naomi. Elim House provided physical comfort and safety, yet holding onto bitterness created inner turmoil.

Through spiritual study on Genesis 6, Tiffany realized that human beings were created for God's glory—and that seeking to honor Him does not diminish our own happiness. Rather, true joy is found when we align our hearts with His love, let go of resentment, and extend grace to others.

From Survival to a Purposeful Future

Spiritual growth often translates into practical, daily discipline. Before coming to the shelter, Tiffany struggled with deep isolation. Living alone, her days blurred into endless cycles of sleep and passivity, lacking motivation or direction for the future.

At Elim House, structured daily routines—preparing meals, keeping shared spaces clean, and engaging in morning Bible study—helped rebuild her rhythm and self-worth. Reading Proverbs 26:15 challenged her to step out of passivity.

“A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.”
— Proverbs 26:15 (NIV)

Today, we’re encouraged to share that Tiffany is taking active steps toward a bright future, living with intention as she grows in her obedience to the Lord. After completing her stay at the Elim House, she enrolled in culinary school to gain professional skills. Her journey highlights how physical safety, emotional care, and reliance on Christ come together to move beyond survival mode and into a life of purpose.
