FORTUNE COMES WITH THE HORSE

If you walk through a Chinese shopping district this February, the traditional Lunar New Year decorations look a bit different. Amidst the red lanterns and gold-trimmed zodiac symbols for the Year of the Horse, a surprising face has started appearing on shopfronts and smartphone wallpapers: the icy, platinum-blond sneer of Draco Malfoy.

The Harry Potter antagonist’s sudden rise to "lucky charm" status isn't about a sudden love for Slytherin. Instead, it’s the result of a linguistic coincidence that the internet has turned into a viral phenomenon.

In Mandarin, Malfoy’s name is transliterated as 馬爾福 (“ma er fu”). 

  • The first character 馬 (“ma”) literally means “horse” 

  • The final character 福 (“fu”) means “fortune” or “blessing” 

Together, this sounds similar to auspicious phrases like 馬來福 (“ma lai fu”), which means “fortune comes with the horse,” creating an accidental but deeply appealing association between Malfoy and prosperity. 

REBRANDING AND REDEMPTION

Images and videos of red Draco-themed decorations are flooding platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu (China’s version of TikTok and Instagram respectively). Searches such as “Malfoy Chinese New Year Wallpaper” are among the most popular, and typical designs combine Draco’s characteristic smirk with traditional good luck motifs. Many of these wallpapers carry playful captions like “pure blood blessings” and “pure blood’s wealth,” while festive Lunar New Year couplets riff on Hogwarts lore, promising to “add ten digits to your bank account” as if “adding ten points to Slytherin,” or even joking in aristocratic Malfoy fashion, “I will tell my father to give you red packets.”

The jokes about 'pure blood blessings' carry a sharp, unintended sting. In the Harry Potter universe, 'Pure Blood' is the ultimate status of the insider, a reference to the ones who belong. In contemporary China, status is everything. While Malfoy’s fictional pedigree is celebrated on red envelopes, North Korean defectors are branded with the status of 'illegal economic migrants,' a label that strips them of their rights and makes them targets for repatriation. A fictional villain is welcomed for his name while real refugees are hunted for their lack of papers.

SOMBER REALITY FOR NORTH KOREAN DEFECTORS IN CHINA

While Draco Malfoy’s unlikely ascent to mascot status offers a light-hearted cross-cultural laugh during the festival, the situation for North Korean defectors in China remains grim and deeply bitter. The absence of legal status and formal refugee recognition means that, even as families gather for Lunar New Year dinners and fireworks, many defectors spend the holiday in hiding. Cut off from their families and unable to travel, they avoid crowded streets amid heightened holiday surveillance in public spaces, confining themselves to cramped apartments to avoid police checks. With factories and many local businesses shuttered for the weeklong break, work disappears as well, leaving them isolated, invisible and fearful of arrest during a season defined by reunion and celebration.

Meanwhile, Christians who provide shelter, food or safe passage to North Korean defectors are closely monitored by the Chinese government, as authorities frame independent religious activity as a potential foreign threat. During major national holidays such as Lunar New Year, when China experiences the world’s largest annual human migration (with an estimated record-breaking 9.5 billion passenger trips expected over the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush this year), authorities increase security measures in transport hubs, neighborhoods and places of gathering. For defector communities, the result is a holiday that amplifies isolation as churches and faith groups that might otherwise organize shared meals or offer companionship limit gatherings to avoid attracting attention.

In 2026, Draco Malfoy, a cruel and prideful character created by J.K. Rowling, is warmly reimagined as a bringer of fortune, with his image adorning homes and malls across China. Yet real people escaping hardship lack even the basic dignity of refuge, while those motivated by faith to offer love and care to others are treated with suspicion and perceived as greater threats compared to a once-reviled villain. In a festival that celebrates renewal and good fortune, the irony is simply too difficult to ignore.

Kim Jong-un’s Japanese Mother: Ko Yong-hui

Ko Yong-hui, the late mother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, remains one of the most mysterious figures in the regime’s history. Despite her intimate role in shaping the current leadership, she has been systematically erased from North Korea’s official narrative. Ko’s story is not just a biographical curiosity, but a political liability.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SUPREME LEADER

Born in 1952 in Osaka’s Tsuruhashi district (the largest Korean neighborhood in Japan), Ko was part of Japan’s Korean diaspora. Her father, Ko Gyo-taek, worked in a military factory supporting Japan’s war effort and later fled to North Korea to escape prosecution for smuggling. This background, far from revolutionary, posed a political challenge for a regime built on anti-Japanese sentiment and the glorification of the “Paektu bloodline” – a mythic lineage that traces back to Kim Il-sung and his guerilla resistance against Japanese rule. Ko’s Japanese ties would therefore place her in the lowest caste according to North Korea's rigid songbun caste system.

Together with her father, Ko moved to North Korea at the tender age of 10 as part of a repatriation program known as the “Paradise on Earth” campaign that lured approximately 93,340 ethnic Korean residents in Japan (Zainichi Koreans) to North Korea between 1959 and 1984. By Ko’s early twenties, she had joined the Mansudae Art Troupe and caught the attention of Kim Jong-il, who bestowed her the title of “Merited Actress” in 1972. She bore him three illegitimate children: Kim Jong-chul (their eldest son, rumored to be apolitical and more interested in pop music than leadership, was said to have a “soft personality” and “feminine traits,” reportedly requiring hormone treatment to appear more masculine), Kim Jong-un and Kim Yo-jong (their youngest daughter more often known as the most dangerous woman in North Korea).

Though Ko lived with Kim Jong-il for nearly three decades, she was never publicly acknowledged as his wife and rarely appeared in state media due to her birth heritage. Sadly, her final years were marked by illness and exile. Diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 1990s, she delayed treatment due to succession tensions. By the time she sought medical care in Paris in 2004, it was too late, and she died at the age of 51. Her grave on Mount Taesong remains one of the few public acknowledgements of her existence.

SECRETS OF THE MOTHER THAT SHAKES NORTH KOREA’S MYTH

Throughout the years, there have been careful attempts to elevate Ko’s status of revolutionary matriarch, akin to North Korea’s founding father Kim Il-sung’s first wife, Kim Jong-suk. For instance, North Korea began quietly promoting Ko in 2002, granting her the title “Respected Mother” – though notably, her name was never mentioned in official materials. Another glimpse into her limited cult of personality is a secret document published in 2002 that praised Ko as “the most faithful of the faithful, endlessly loyal to the Beloved and Respected comrade Supreme Commander,” and even featured a song hailing her: 

The Mother is Young

Looking up to the bright smile of Mother,

In my heart, ten millions buds flower,

For Commander-Father’s health,

Be always, Mother, in eternal youth.

Although the campaign was briefly paused following her death in 2004, Pyongyang revived it in 2011 with the release of the documentary Mother of Great Songun Korea, timed with Kim Jong-un’s confirmed succession, portraying Ko as a guiding maternal figure. However, the film conspicuously omitted her name, birthplace and family history to bury her past. By 2015, the regime began recalling and destroying copies of the documentary, fearing that her Japanese heritage and unofficial status as Kim Jong-il’s consort would undermine the legitimacy of Kim Jong-un’s succession.

Yet, Ko’s influence on Kim Jong-un was profound. According to journalist Yoji Gomi, Ko taught the young Kim Japanese songs and language, and her sister, Ko Yong-suk – who later defected to the U.S. – helped raise him in Switzerland. To this day, Ko Yong-hui’s legacy continues to live on in subtle ways, including in Kim Jong-un’s outreach this May to the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (a group known as Chongyron that acts as the DPRK’s de facto embassy in Tokyo), during its 70th anniversary celebrations. In his message, Kim referred to them as “our compatriots resident in Japan” and warmly invited them to visit their “homeland,” signalling a personal connection that echoes his mother’s roots.

North Korean Refugees: Suggestions for Kim Jong Un

As an organization at work in aiding North Korean refugees who escape out of the Hermit Kingdom, Crossing Borders is careful to keep up-to-date on the news coming out of the country. Some of the information coming out of North Korea this year has been heartening. A shorter hemline signals a country that is beginning to change with the times. A first lady is making the regime seem more people-friendly. All of these things are great. Recently North Korean media released text of a speech Kim Jong Un made to the Workers’ Party on July 26, which called for reforms to the country’s economic system. In the speech, Kim stated that the party would focus on “developing the economy and improving livelihoods, so that the Korean people lead happy and civilized lives.” Even better.

But if nation would really like to show its strength, it must welcome North Korean refugees back into the country without the risk of punishment.

In spending time with North Korean refugees along the border and in South Korea, it is obvious to many of our field workers and staff that they miss their families back home. Because North Korea maintains a stranglehold on all forms of communication, it is very difficult for families to communicate and virtually impossible for them to see each other.

This is the agonizing decision that all North Korean refugees who fled their country have made. One family in this position comes to mind.

Our staff met the "Lee" family in a restaurant in Northeast China a few years ago. They were upstanding members of the Workers’ Party and, according to them, they had never starved because of their class standing and they had never committed a crime. This was until they couldn’t find food around 2007. The patriarch of this family of four had to make the tough choice to go into the illegal money transfer business.

Within months he was caught and had a few hours to decide what to do. He fled with his wife and his teenage daughter to China. His son, who was in elementary school, was left with relatives. They feared he would slow the family’s escape. When the family met with our staff for dinner, they could hardly focus on the meal as they told their story. All they could talk about was their son who was trapped in North Korea.

As a response, Crossing Borders helped send money into North Korea to get their son out of the country.

What do Kim Jong Un and the Democratic People's Republic leaders fear most about allowing North Korean refugees back into their country? Information. With an inflow of people who have seen the prosperity of the outside world, North Korea is afraid that their people might grumble for change and the ruling elite might lose power.

But change is already afoot. DVDs from the outside world are secret, but commonplace. People get news regularly from foreign news outlets beaming short wave radio signals into the country. Illegal cell phones connected to the Chinese networks are available to some through the black market.

What is North Korea trying to shield its people from? The cat is out of the bag.

For people to live in happiness they must be given the opportunity to see their families. New economic reforms will undoubtedly open the country up even more. There is no risk in slowly allowing North Korean refugees back to help rebuild the country that they love. This will help North Koreans live, as Kim Jong Un states, "happy and civilized lives."
